What makes a diamond truly sustainable?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
The simple answer? When you buy more sustainable diamonds, you\u2019re choosing a more environmentally responsible option \u2013 one that seeks to prioritise environmental protection and resource conservation (looking after our planet, basically). We have good news: more people than ever before (including younger shoppers!) are paying attention to ethical diamond jewellery and conscious luxury. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
It means the people creating or sourcing diamonds have the utmost respect for the planet and its people. So that usually involves things like cutting down on carbon emissions, embracing renewable energy and making sure that people and the planet benefit wherever possible. From rewilding programs to preserving biodiversity, the aim of the game is for the impact on Earth to be as minimal and respectful as possible. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
One of the most exciting recent shifts in diamond sustainability initiatives is traceability. Traceability means being able to trace a diamond\u2019s provenance and journey from its source right to your jewellery box; knowing which country it originated from, which mine it was recovered from, and where it was cut or polished. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
As you\u2019d imagine, knowing this information is something of a game-changer, since transparency around where a diamond comes from \u2014 and the conditions it was recovered or made in \u2014 helps us choose diamonds linked to more positive environmental initiatives and responsible mining practices. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
While interest in\u00a0eco-friendly\u00a0diamonds\u00a0has been on the uptick, it is important to keep in mind that genius marketing strategies, even those\u00a0centred on\u00a0sustainability aspects\u00a0(especially with respect to\u00a0lab-grown diamonds), may not always be factually\u00a0correct.\u00a0Awareness is key!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As we mentioned earlier, LGDs\u00a0are often touted as the \u2018sustainable\u2019 choice since\u00a0they\u2019re\u00a0not directly mined from the ground. But, producing a gemstone in a matter of weeks (that would otherwise naturally take millions or billions of years) requires a\u00a0lot\u00a0of energy.<\/p>\n\n\n

Carbon emissions are usually unmonitored too, which can lead to chemical contamination of the water used during this super-fast diamond turnaround. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
And demand-driven\u00a0lab-grown\u00a0diamonds\u00a0can be tough on the environment in other ways \u2013 the marketing of \u2018eco-friendly\u2019 LGDs\u00a0has\u00a0been called into\u00a0question\u00a0in the recent past, as some of their sustainability claims\u00a0can\u2019t\u00a0always be substantiated. For example, most LGDs are produced in India\u00a0(most notably in Gujarat)\u00a0and China1<\/a><\/sup>, where\u00a0the majority of\u00a0facilities\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0use sustainable energy sources. On top of that, other mined materials like iron, nickel and cobalt are usually part of the process, meaning LGDs\u00a0aren\u2019t\u00a0technically \u2018mining-free\u2019 gems either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sadly, despite the energy-heavy nature of LGD production, efforts to cut down on things like greenhouse gases and their carbon footprint have been limited across the industry, which is why talk of \u2018sustainable\u2019 or \u2018planet-friendly\u2019 LGDs\u00a0shouldn\u2019t\u00a0be taken at face value.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0important to do your own research into the provenance of any\u00a0lab-grown diamond,\u00a0just as much as you should with a\u00a0natural diamond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In recent years, plenty of diamond companies have seriously stepped up their game, putting in real effort (not to mention resources) into protecting the environment and ensuring their mining practices are held to higher sustainability standards. <\/p>\n\n\n\n We\u2019re\u00a0talking\u00a0wildlife conservation projects, land rehabilitation and long-term plans and commitments to make things as sustainable as they can\u00a0possibly be. And\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0not just about the land; local communities can benefit hugely too.\u00a0A large proportion\u00a0of the rough diamond value typically stays local, supporting employment, businesses2<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0and the families living in the region, as well as\u00a0benefitting\u00a0systems like schools,\u00a0healthcare\u00a0and local infrastructure, with workers protected by strict\u00a0labour\u00a0regulations.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ever heard of the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme3<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0(KPCS)? Named after the South African city it originated in,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0an initiative set up to stop any rough diamonds being traded to fund warfare.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n The system brings together governments, diamond-producing countries, mining companies and industry bodies, alongside civil society organisations, all working collectively to monitor and regulate the global rough diamond trade. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Initially focusing on countries like Sierra Leone,\u00a0Angola\u00a0and the Democratic Republic of\u00a0the\u00a0Congo, the KPCS now includes over 80 participating countries. It requires strict documentation and\u00a0tracking\u00a0of diamonds to ensure\u00a0they\u2019re\u00a0conflict-free all the way from mine to market.<\/p>\n\n\n While natural diamond recovery isn\u2019t completely impact-free, with responsible practices and real, genuine accountability, the natural diamond industry is proving that luxury and sustainability commitments really can go hand-in-hand. After all, we\u2019re not just looking for sparkle when we shop for diamonds \u2014 we want a diamond that reflects our core values, which can leave a positive mark on the world. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Supporting natural diamonds means investing in more than just a pretty piece of jewellery. It amounts to investing in emotional resonance and putting your faith in gemstones that you hope, one day, will turn into prized legacy-laden heirlooms. This is why it\u2019s even more pivotal to back ethical trade, uplift communities, protect ecosystems and own a piece of the Earth\u2019s history with sentimental and more sustainable value. <\/p>\n\n\n\n While lab-grown diamond alternatives may seem like the simpler or more affordable choice, many can still lack transparency around their environmental credentials, and can\u2019t deliver the same level of meaningful impact that natural diamonds from a responsible company can. <\/p>\n\n\n\n The take-home?
