Though Cartier&nbsp;is known to have&nbsp;attended the&nbsp;Delhi Durbar in 1911, a huge event celebrating the coronation of King George V and Queen Mary,&nbsp;a direct association with the Maharaja dates to around a decade later&nbsp;when&nbsp;the Maharaja travelled to Paris.&nbsp;Bearing India\u2019s most dazzling gemstones&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;natural diamonds, rubies,&nbsp;emeralds&nbsp;and&nbsp;more&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;he commissioned the&nbsp;House of Cartier&nbsp;to turn them all into exquisite jewellery, with the&nbsp;Patiala Necklace&nbsp;being the collection\u2019s crowning glory.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However,&nbsp;unmatched beauty&nbsp;isn\u2019t&nbsp;the only thing that makes it unique.&nbsp;In 1948, the&nbsp;Patiala Necklace&nbsp;vanished&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;and remained hidden&nbsp;for 34 years,&nbsp;until&nbsp;its centrepiece,&nbsp;the De Beers&nbsp;Diamond&nbsp;appeared&nbsp;at an auction in 1982.&nbsp;Sixteen years after that,&nbsp;part of the necklace resurfaced at&nbsp;an&nbsp;antiques shop in London.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What really happened to&nbsp;the Patiala Necklace&nbsp;over the&nbsp;decades? It is widely claimed that the\u00a0Patiala Necklace\u00a0was\u00a0dismantled and smuggled out of the country after Patiala became a part of newly independent India.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The\u00a0necklace\u2019s whereabouts remained unknown for decades until 1982,\u00a0when\u00a0its\u00a0centrepiece the\u00a0De Beers\u00a0Diamond showed up at\u00a0the\u00a0Sotheby\u2019s\u00a0Patiala Royal Family\u00a0auction in Geneva.<sup data-fn=\"2697ed86-2308-466f-8a2c-5d84e50b55b7\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#2697ed86-2308-466f-8a2c-5d84e50b55b7\" id=\"2697ed86-2308-466f-8a2c-5d84e50b55b7-link\">8<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Then, in 1998, the platinum skeleton of the necklace\u00a0was discovered in an antiques shop in London.
