More modern couples\u00a0than ever\u00a0are increasingly opting for\u00a0sustainably sourced diamonds for their weddings.\u00a0For the modern elite, responsible luxury\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0just\u00a0a trend. Instead,\u00a0it ensures that the gifts\u00a0they\u00a0pass down to the next generation are as pure and enduring as the vows they celebrate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A natural diamond carries something a laboratory stone cannot: a place of origin and a journey. Rough is mined in one country, cut in another and sold in a third, and India sits at the centre of that chain: Surat polishes close to 90% of the world’s diamonds. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Platforms such as Tracr by De Beers Group use blockchain and AI to accurately trace the journey of a natural diamond from its source to the showroom. It is able to verify not only a diamond\u2019s origin (the site it was recovered from and exactly where it was cut or polished) but also the environmental and labour standards along the way6<\/sup>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n This is the real distinction from a laboratory-grown stone. A natural diamond has a source that can be named and a route that can be traced. A laboratory stone begins in a reactor, which is why disclosure at the point of sale, now required in markets such as the United States, matters: buyers deserve to know which they are holding.7<\/sup> <\/p>\n\n\n\n Walk into any modern luxury boutique, and the conversation is shifting from simple aesthetics to fundamental ethics. Discerning buyers are looking up from the display cases to ask: \u201cWhat are sustainable diamonds, exactly?\u201d <\/em>and \u201cAre diamonds sustainable in the first place?\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n This growing awareness around\u00a0ethically sourced diamonds\u00a0is transforming luxury retail. By law, every diamond mining project must have a fully funded closure plan before recovery even begins. Fast forward to today and it\u2019s become one of Africa\u2019s most stable and fastest-growing economies. Diamond revenues now account for around 30% of GDP and 85% of export income18<\/sup>, funding free primary education, world-class healthcare and social investment19<\/sup>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Across the natural diamond industry, jobs are well-paid and well-respected. Employees at the top six producers earn 66% more than the national average, in roles that are highly skilled and strictly regulated for safety and environmental standards20<\/sup>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n From education and healthcare to housing and clean water, ethically sourced diamonds help build futures. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Close to nine in ten of the world’s diamonds are cut and polished in India, most of them in Surat, where the craft supports close to a million skilled workers.\u00a0So\u00a0in India, this community model involves\u00a0expertise\u00a0passed between generations, concentrated in one place, supporting families across Gujarat.\u00a0As the country invests in skilling its workforce, the diamond trade stands as one of its oldest and largest working examples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sustainable and ethical practices don\u2019t start and end at recovery sites, though. Many natural diamond companies are conscious of the whole supply chain and are keen that every element, from packaging to the precious metals their gemstones will be set in, is as future-facing as possible. <\/p>\n\n\n\n In support, jewellery brands are increasingly embracing recycled and responsibly sourced metals. While definitions of \u2018recycled gold\u2019 remain contested, leading names including Tiffany & Co. and Chopard have pioneered its use in their collections21<\/sup>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n When it comes to sourcing precious metals, strict standards apply. For De Beers Group, this responsibility sits with its manufacturing partners, who must comply with either the De Beers Best Practice Principles22<\/sup> or the Responsible Jewelry Council\u2019s Chain of Custody Standard23<\/sup>.
