India’s luxury story is no longer being told from the outside in. Across Mumbai’s boutique-lined streets, Delhi’s design districts, Bengaluru’s ever-expanding retail corridors and a growing list of cities besides, a new kind of consumer is rewriting what luxury means.

For most of us, a luxury purchase is never just a purchase. It’s the watch bought the week when a long-chased goal is finally met. The bag earned after the first big year at work. The necklace worn at a wedding and remembered for decades after. Call it aspiration, achievement, self-expression, celebration or simply the joy of choosing something for someone else.

India’s Most Desired Luxury Purchases Index ranks ten of the country’s most coveted luxury categories side by side, to understand not just what Indian consumers are buying, but what they value most and why. What the data reveals is a luxury landscape that’s evolving fast, and increasingly, on India’s own terms.

How to read this: Each of the ten categories has been scored from 1 to 10 across eight different metrics, adding up to a composite score out of 80. One thing worth keeping in mind as you read on: a lower score doesn’t mean a category is any less desired. It simply means it shows up differently across the criteria we used to measure desire itself.

Sneak peek: Our top five

1. Diamond & fine jewellery

Total score: 68.2/80

Category snapshot:
Diamond and fine jewellery sits at the very heart of India’s luxury story, equal parts heirloom, investment and pure indulgence. It’s a category built on permanence: a solitaire ring, a diamond necklace, a pair of statement earrings, each one designed to be worn for decades and handed down for generations. What sets it apart is that rare pairing of sentiment and sparkle. Few purchases carry quite the same emotional weight alongside lasting value.

Why it ranks here:
Diamond and fine jewellery leads the index with a score of 68.2/80 because it sits at the unique intersection of emotional resonance, generational legacy and financial stability. Unlike transient lifestyle luxury, high jewellery serves as both an intimate personal statement and a tangible store of value. This dual identity as a cultural mainstay and an appreciating asset cements its status as the nation’s top luxury desire.

Shopping tip:
When making fine jewellery purchases, have them centred around milestone-driven storytelling. Consider these pieces as future heirlooms that capture personal memories and secure lasting family equity, appealing directly to those seeking both deep emotional sentiment and enduring material value.

2. Luxury cars

Total score: 65.5/80

Category snapshot:
Luxury cars are the most public flex. It’s a category built on presence: the badge on the grille, the growl of the engine, the way the energy of a room shifts when one pulls up outside. What makes it stand out is that it’s luxury you live in, not just own.

Why it ranks here:
Luxury cars land at #2 because they rival jewellery on status and craftsmanship, but through fewer, bigger-ticket moments rather than jewellery’s steady rhythm of festivals, weddings and everyday gifting. It’s a category people invest in rather than collect. High desirability, lower frequency. That trade-off is what keeps it just a notch behind the top spot.

Shopping tip:
Dhanteras and the days leading into Diwali are considered the most auspicious window for big-ticket buys and luxury car brands know it, timing launches and festive offers accordingly. Less a wrapped gift and more a shared milestone, a car booked or delivered in that window turns a major purchase into a meaningful ritual.

3. Luxury watches

Total score: 64.9/80

Category snapshot:
Luxury watches are built on craftsmanship and decades of heritage. They’re pieces that only gets more storied with wear. What makes this category stand out is its duality. It’s deeply personal on the wrist yet instantly recognised by those who know exactly what they’re looking at.

Why it ranks here:
Luxury watches cater to a growing demographic of consumers seeking quiet luxury and discreet status. By blending technical precision, historical heritage and strong secondary-market value, high-end timepieces function as both personal statements of refined taste and tangible alternative investments.

Shopping tip:
Treat a high-end watch purchase during key festive or life milestones as a strategic investment in wearable heritage. Prioritise timepieces with proven mechanical craftsmanship and strong secondary-market liquidity, ensuring that a celebratory gift to yourself or a loved one acts as both an intimate marker of personal success and an enduring store of value for future generations.

4. Designer fashion

Total score: 62/80

Category snapshot:
Designer fashion thrives on the transformative power of self-expression. Ranking fourth with a score of 62/80, its key strength lies in its emotional immediacy, offering fluid, seasonal reinvention alongside couture-level craftsmanship. It seamlessly bridges personal identity with high-visibility prestige.

Why it ranks here:
Designer fashion delivers immediate visual impact, unlike the enduring capital preservation offered by hard luxury categories. While its fast-evolving nature and lower investment yield keep it just behind jewellery and watches, its high accessibility and strong cultural presence during festive and celebratory moments make it an indispensable driver of daily luxury lifestyle aspirations.

Shopping tip:
Approach festive and occasion-led fashion purchases as curated, high-impact statements of personal style rather than temporary trends. Focus on limited-run festive capsules and versatile couture separates that offer styling flexibility across events, ensuring a luxury garment delivers immediate cultural resonance while remaining a timeless staple in your wardrobe.

5. Premium technology & electronics

Total score: 61.2/80

Category snapshot:
Technology redefines luxury through seamless utility, sleek minimalism and peak operational performance. Scoring 61.2/80 at fifth place, its strength lies in transforming everyday functional touchpoints into effortless, high-design lifestyle upgrades.

Why it ranks here:
Premium technology sits in fifth position because its value is driven by rapid innovation and daily functional utility rather than long-term asset preservation. While shorter product lifecycles prevent it from matching the generational investment appeal of hard luxury like jewellery or watches, its integration into modern productivity and high-design living keeps it firmly anchored as an essential lifestyle upgrade.

Shopping tip:
Treat high-end tech purchases as investments in daily friction-free living. During festive gifting, prioritise sleek, design-forward devices or flagship ecosystem upgrades that merge high utility with sophisticated aesthetics, ensuring your gift delivers elevated everyday convenience long after the celebrations end.
